Dumplin' Reviewed by Larisse

Willowdean Dickson has been bullied because of her weight and appearance since she was little but has learned to ignore the haters for the most part. At age 17, most girls would have signed up to be a part of the town's annual Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant which is judged by former beauty queen Rosie Dickson, aka "her mom".  Willowdean's aunt Lucy, who was a slightly bigger size than Willowdean herself, recently passed away due to health conditions. While Willowdean was searching Lucy's room, she found an application form for the pageant from years before realizing that Lucy wanted to enter but was scared or didn't have the confidence to. She then makes a decision that not only helps her, but also builds the confidence of others. She is aware of how her mother disapproves of her shape and size but that won't stop her from entering the pageant. Will Willowdean be able to survive the pageant without others taking her seriously? This book promotes body positivity, self-confidence, and looks into a teenager's life with a body that society doesn't consider ideal. I think this book represents the pillar courage and I would rate it 5/5 stars.
