Three Times Lucky By Sheila Turnage Reviewed by Devon Monahan

This book is about a girl named Mo who lives in Tupelo Landing, North Carolina. She lives with the Colonel and Miss Lana after she was found by the Colonel as a baby during a hurricane. Despite that her adopted family has given her a very good home, she is still trying to find her birth mom who she calls her Upstream Mother. During their summer vacation, Mo and her best friend Dale got involved in solving of one of Tupelo Landing’s resident’s murder. Are they investigating the murder or is Mo’s adopted family somehow involved in the crime? Does she ever find her upstream mother?

I think the middle school pillar that is best represented by this book is courage. Mo shows her courageousness when she tries to find Miss Lana in the intense hurricane. She stands up to a crooked police officer when she realizes the officer is working against them. Every time Mo stands up to her arch-rival, Anna Celeste, shows a little bravery.

I would rate this book 4/5 stars. It was an interesting story, but I found the setting and the speech patterns of the southern way of life was different than ours and I had trouble relating to it.

If you enjoy this book the I would suggest reading the other three sequels named: The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing, The Odds of Getting Even and The Law of Finders Keepers.

If I could rename this book, I would name it “The Trouble in Tupelo Landing”. I did not really like the name “Three Times Lucky” because it did not really go with the story that well.

The big life lesson that I learned from this book is that family is not just your birth Mom or Dad and people who are not related to you can still love you and support you just as much. Mo discovered this at the end of the story. She has a family even though she is not related to them.
