The Dragonet Prophecy by Tui. T Sutherland Reviewed by Fallon

Over the summer I read the graphic novel version of The Dragonet Prophecy by Tui. T Sutherland, and illustrated by Mike Holmes. This is Book 1 of the Wings of Fire series.

This book is about five dragonets (young dragons) whose destiny is to stop an ongoing war between different tribes of dragons. Their destiny was foretold by a prophecy from a scroll, which said that once the war had been going on for twenty years, the dragonets would bring peace among the tribes. Sometimes the dragonets doubt that they can stop the war, but have to remind themselves that if they don’t it will become worse and they will never live in peace. They also have to face the fact that they could die fighting for that peace.

I think the pillar the dragonets develop most throughout the story is courage because the dragonets have to build up the courage to stop the war even though there are evil dragons that don’t want the war to end, and want to see the dragonets fail. This courage is shown, for example, when Clay, one of the five dragonets, leads a chorus of dragons in song, in an attempt to distract Queen Burn, an ally of the evil Queen Scarlett:

“Oh. The dragonets are coming! They’re coming to save the day! They’re coming to fight!
For they know what’s right!

The dragonets! The dragonets...”

After hearing the song, Queen Burn and Queen Scarlett have a scary conversation that is overheard by the dragonets:

Queen Burn: “We need to stop the prophecy. Let’s kill them (the dragonets) and get it over with.”

Queen Scarlett: “Well...yes. But think. If we kill the dragonets now, out of sight, it does us no good. Even if we hang them from the palace walls, no one will believe it’s them. But if we put the dragonets in the arena, everyonecan seethem die. They’ll lose faith in the prophecy. Muchmore powerful that way, with gruesome visuals! Don’t you agree?”

Queen Burn: ‘What if they win?” Queen Scarlett: “They won’t.”

The dragonets have to be very brave to continue on their journey to stop the war with evil dragons like that to deal with!

This book is great for people who like adventure and a lot of action. I personally like books with fantasy creatures like dragons, so this book is a perfect match for me! I also enjoy that the dragons are the ones actually talking and there isn't a narrator talking for them.

I would have preferred a different ending to Book 1, but I won’t say what, as that would spoil the ending for others who haven’t read the book. I also preferred the art style from the cover of the regular novel over the art style of the graphic novel.

Another book series I recommend is Warriors, also written by Tui. T Sutherland except under the pen name Erin Hunter. Instead of tribes of dragons, Warriors is about clans of cats, but with the same type of adventure and action as Wings of Fire.

My rating for The Dragonet Prophecy: ★★★★☆.
